Martin Scorsese is not a fan of Sopranos.
That information comes from Sopranos The creator David Chase himself, who appears on The Hollywood Reporter's It happened in Hollywood Podcast with filmmaker Alex GibneyDirector of DOC 2024 Sage Guy: David Chase and sopranos.
In the doc, Chase says: “Marty Scorsese does not like the show. He said:” I don't understand – it's like all these trees and shit. “”
Chase continues to apply that the Goodfellas The director could not identify with an epic of Mafia told in the sprawling wooded suburb of New Jersey, as opposed to a set in the Urban Jungles of New York, where Scorsese grew up.
On the podcast, I evoke the moment, asking Chase: “was [Scorsese] really not a fan of Sopranos? Has he already judged the file to say that?
“Yes, he did it,” replied Chase.
Scorsese said so much in a 2019 interview with View and sound Magazine, saying at the point of sale: “I think I have seen only one episode … because I cannot identify myself with this generation of hell. Are they living in New Jersey with big houses? I don't understand.
“They use the language – from four letters – in front of their daughters, at the dinner table? I do not understand that. I did not grow in this way,” continued the director.
Chase was invited to unpack the disgust of Scorsese for the famous HBO series – winner of 21 Emmy Primetime – We It happened in Hollywood.
“What was it?” I ask. “How could he not appreciate what you did?”
“I don't know. You have to ask him, ”says Chase.
When asked if the two had already crossed, Chase shares: “I met him briefly, but we never talked about it.”
Chase then continues to develop the theory in which he relayed Wicked.
“It's very simple,” says Chase. “He grew up in New York in Little Italy, and there are five families organized on crime. This is what he represented. I grew up in New Jersey and there were branches of the suburbs of New Jersey and there were branches of five families organized, but they are different from those in New York, a different culture.
“People go in the suburbs to build fantasy houses and get trees and stuff. It's as simple as it was real for this place. As if hers is real for his, ”says Chase.
And yet, that does not explain it entirely – like large parts of Scorsese Goodfellas were filmed in green rural parts of New York State, Long Island and, yes, New Jersey. And Sopranos Certainly paid tribute to Scorsese, even by playing a dark actor in a cameo role in season one.
Scorsese was not available to comment.
