After years of anticipation, Rockstar Games announced Friday that Grand Theft Auto VIOne of the most anticipated video games of the decade, will be released later than many, the company announced.
The release of the game was delayed until May 26, 2026, said Rockstar Games.
“We are sorry that it is later than expected,” the company said in a statement. “The interest and the excitement surrounding a new car from Grand Theft have been really humiliating for our entire team.”
Rockstar has recognized the growing pressure surrounding the next episode of its open world franchise, but underlined the studio's commitment to provide a game that meets expectations.
“With each match we have released, the goal has always been to try to exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception,” the statement said.
Although delays are rarely welcomed for players, Rockstar Games stressed that the additional time is necessary to offer the quality level that fans deserve.
The Grand Theft Auto series remains one of the most successful in Rockstar Games in the history of the game, said the company. Its latest major episode, Grand Theft Auto V, has sold more than 180 million copies worldwide since its release in 2013.
