Karan Johar says that he “inherited the good will of his father but no money,” explains why he decided to associate with Adar Ponawalla for Rs 1000 CR | Bollywood News

Karan Johar Sold 50% of the participation of his production house, Dharma Productions, in Adar Ponawalla for 1,000 breaks of rupees in 2024. In a recent interaction, the filmmaker spoke of the decision and shared that they were making this decision because they wanted to develop the company and needed funds for the same. He also talked about the history of his business and said that they had started to make success only after Karan began making films in 1998, as before that, Dharma had a series of flops.
Addressing Raj Shamani on his YouTube channel, Karan admitted that many Dharma productions films earlier were collaboration efforts, which is why, a large part of the profit should be divided between the partners and did not stay with Dharma. He said he had finally become suspicious of making films through such partnerships and explained: “I did not want to do collaborative projects so that all the profitability remains with Dharma Productions. Our greatest successes at the time all had partners because we could not finance these films on our own capacities, because we were new. ”
Speaking of his father and the inheritance of the late producer Yash Johar, he said: “Those who say nepotism, they do not know my story. I inherited my father's goodwill but not money. Before Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, we had 5 flops in a row. ” Karan recalled that it was his film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai who resurrected Dharma Productions. “The release of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998 marked the beginning of Dharma's productions as a strong business. What I had was the good will of my father and his enormous belief. He had a good will, he was very loved but he did not see success,” he said.
Karan told how the success of his films after Kkhh, like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Kabhi Alvida Navva Kehna, helped make the production of Dharma productions in a lucrative business. However, after seeing the success of these films, Yash Johar died. To help with Dharma Productions, Karan’s childhood friend, Apoorva Mehta, came to her rescue. He said: “After the death of my father in 2004, I had to go further and I could not have done it without apoorva Mehta (CEO of Dharma Productions). He was my best friend of the school and he left his life in London and the day of the day in Mumbai. He had our own trip.
Explaining his decision to sell Dharma Productions participations in Adar Ponawalla, chief executive officer of the Serum Institute of India, he said: “In 2023, we realized that we have to take advantage and grow. Money. I have to succeed and make my business profitable. »»
However, when he argued that Dharma Productions did not have a happy new year in 2024 in terms of lucrative projects, Karan defended his films and said: “Kill was very appreciated, Mr. and Mrs. Mahi were profitable, Bad Newz was also profitable, Jigra even broken and at the moment, we are ready to produce our first film Punjabe, then Dhadak 2 is very excited.
Share his reflections more on success and failure in the cinema sector, he said: “I do not take success seriously or do not take failure. Failure is a final result. Sometimes I like the final result. I have a problem with an average film. I need results. You tell me where I am wrong, I will learn and I advance. “
