Trump criticizes the Mexican president for having rejected the offer of American troops to fight cartels

President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected his offer to send us troops to Mexico to help fight cartels because she is afraid of them.

Addressing journalists on Air Force One, Trump said that he floated the idea of sending American troops to cope with Mexican cartels facilitating drug trafficking and criticized Sheinbaum for refusing his offer.

“She is so afraid of the cartels that she cannot walk … And I think she is a charming woman. The president of Mexico is a charming woman, but she is so afraid of the cartels that she cannot even think directly,” said Trump.

His reaction occurred after Sheinbaum confirmed that Trump put it on a call last month to allow the US military to play a more important role in the fight against drug cartels in Mexico.

Sheinbaum said she told Trump at the time that Mexico “would never accept” an American military presence.

“No, President Trump, our territory is inalienable, sovereignty is inalienable,” said Sheinbaum. “We can collaborate. We can work together, but with you on your territory and we in ours. We can share information, but we will never accept the presence of the American army on our territory.”

There was a greater American military presence on the American-Mexican border after Trump made an order in January to increase the role of the army in the slowdown in the flow of illegal immigrants in the United States

In addition to fighting illegal immigration, Trump said that American troops were necessary to slow down the quantity of fentanyl brought to the United States by drugs.

“This is bad news,” said Trump on Sunday, refering to the cartels. “If Mexico wanted help with the cartels, we would be honored to enter and do it. I told him that I would be honored to enter and do it. The cartels are trying to destroy our country. They are bad.”

US Northern Command has deployed troops and equipment on the southern border, increased inhabited surveillance flights to monitor fentanyl traffic along the border and asked for an extended authority for American special forces to work closely with Mexican forces carrying out operations against cartels.

In February, Trump has appointed many gangs and cartels leading to drugs in the United States as “foreign terrorist organizations”, giving the police for more resources to take measures against groups.
