US President Donald Trump said that it would extend the deadline of June 19 for Bytedance based in China to sell the American assets of Tiktok, the short video application used by 170 million Americans, if no agreement had been concluded by then.
“I would like … I would like to see it done,” said Trump on the NBC news program “Meet the Press with Kristen Welker” in a registered interview on Friday at Trump Domaine in Palm Beach, Floridait is broadcast through the UNITED STATES Sunday.
Trump said he had a “sweet spot” for the application after helping him win young voters in the 2024 Presidential electionAdding: “Tiktok is – it's very interesting, but it will be protected.”
Trump has already has given twice a stay of the application of a prohibition of Tiktok compulsory by the congress which was initially to take effect in January.
An agreement had been in preparation which would make Tiktok American operations turn in a new company based in the United States and belonging to the majority and operated by American investors, but it was suspended after China indicated that he would not approve of it after the Raide Trump announcements price on Chinese products.
Democratic senators argue that Trump has no legal power to extend the deadline and suggest that the agreement that had been studying would not meet legal requirements.
A source close to American investors from Bytedance said last month that work on the potential agreement continues before the deadline of June 19, but the White House and Beijing should resolve the pricing First of all.
Trump told NBC News that China wanted to reach an agreement, citing the impact that 145% prices on Chinese products had on its economy.
He said he would not drop the prices to bring Beijing to the negotiating table, but could possibly lower them as part of a broader agreement.
“At one point, I'm going to lower them because otherwise you could never do business with them. And they want to do business,” he said.
The law obliged Tiktok to stop working by January 19 unless Bytedance ended a deactivation of the American assets of the application. Trump began his second term as president on January 20 and chose not to apply it. He first extended the deadline in early April, then again last month to June 19.
