After the impressive victory of sovereignty on a sloppy track in Kentucky Derby, there was hope that it would be one of those rare years that horse races would be blessed with a Triple Crown competitor.
These hopes were quickly destroyed when it was announced that sovereignty would ignore the second stage of the trilogy (Preakness) and focus on the third (Belmont), triggering a debate according to which the three races are too closely excited. Would that help sport to add more rest between races and increase the probability of a triple crown, or is it what makes everything so difficult – and special – first?
