The Women's World Cup will extend to 48 teams in 2031 when the United States is expected to welcome, says FIFA

Zurich – The Women's World Cup will increase to 48 teams in 2031 when the United States is expected to accommodate the tournament, FIFA confirmed on Friday.

FIFA wanted to extend the 32 team female tournament to match the male world cup which has 48 teams for the first time next year, when the United States is co-organized with Canada and Mexico.

“It is not only a question of having 16 other teams playing in the FIFA Women's World Cup, but of taking the next stages in relation to the female game in general by ensuring that more associations of FIFA members have the opportunity to benefit from the tournament to develop their women's football structures from a holistic point of view,” said FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

The decision follows a month after FIFA said it had only one candidacy for each of the female tournaments 2031 and 2035-the United States followed by the United Kingdom. FIFA should confirm these two hosts next year.
