Wednesday, the Virginia High School League has ratified its transgender participation policy of students as a meeting of the Executive Committee.
The League Executive Committee voted on February 10 to modify the policy in accordance with the executive decree of President Donald Trump to prevent transgender women from playing in the sports teams of the female high school.
Since the policy had already been modified, there was no vote or discussion on the changes on Wednesday by the Executive Committee of the VHSL. The new policy only affects trans girls.
In 2014, the VHSL approved the participation of transgender athletes in preparation sports. The motion was adopted by 27-0 vote from the League Executive Committee, which is made up of school directors and sports directors, among other things, from the whole state.
Since the adoption of this policy from 2014 to December 2024, the Virginia High School League has received 49 total requests for athletes to reclassify their gender identity for competition. Forty-two of these requests were granted by the VHSL.
From October 2020 to December 2024, the VHSL received 31 requests for the total: 21 were for trans boys and 10 for trans girls. Of these 31 requests, 28 were granted.
Due to obtaining the diploma or the decision not to compete, the total number does not currently reflect the number of transgender secondary athletes can still participate in Virginia, the VHSL does not follow the number of people who have ended up participating in athletics.
For confidentiality, VHSL does not publish specific information on the sports of transgender athletes in competition or where they competed.
