“The 100% Trump price on imported films could encourage Hollywood to move us,” said Shekhar Kapur

New Delhi:

The filmmaker Shekhar Kapur criticized US President Donald Trump on Monday for threatening a 100% price on films imported into the United States, saying that this decision could turn around and push Hollywood filmmakers to leave the country.

In an article Sunday evening on his social platform Truth, Trump said that he had authorized the Ministry of Commerce and the office of the US trade representative to slap a price of 100% “on all the films that enter our country which are produced in foreign countries”.

Kapur, known for films such as Mr. India, THE Elizabeth Franchise featuring Cate Blanchett and “What has love to do with that?said “75% of the Hollywood films” from the United States.

“And an important part of the budget of these films is spent outside the United States. The taxation of President Trump by 100% price on all films imported in the United States can encourage Hollywood to be released from the United States! Quite the opposite of what he wanted. #Hollywood #tarrif #donaldtrump #tarrifilm (sic)” The director wrote on X.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap simply shared Trump's comments on his Instagram stories without comment.

“The film industry in America dies of a very rapid death,” said Trump, complaining that other countries “offer all kinds of incentives to move away” filmmakers and studios in the United States.

“This is a concerted effort of other nations and, therefore, a national security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda!” He added in his post.
