My cleaning routine generally involves making a few sprays because I want something powerful that will cut the fat and the dirt. My millet was visiting and saw me mix Bleach and ammonia. She said the chemical smell was too strong and criticized me harshly to mix them.
Is there a real danger here?
Javel + Ammoniac
There is a danger to mix bleaching and ammonia, but many people do not know it. All of this has to do with chemical reactions likely to occur.
Bleach and ammonia are powerful alone. Then they mix together, a toxic gas called chloramine is produced. It can present various health risks.
Toxic smoke occurs
Gaser chloramine, when formed, is toxic. This can cause problems such as:
- Irritated eyes
- Severe respiratory distress
- Aqueous eyes
- Chest pain
- Nausea
If it is exposed to the toxic chemical reaction long enough, it can even damage the airways!

Dangers added
Often people mix chemicals without knowing the dangerous chemical reaction. Then they start to clean in a room where there is not sufficient ventilation. The more you inspire, the more serious the conditions can be. In addition, it can exacerbate other health problems, such as asthma.
The mixture of ammonia and bleach does not lead to a more powerful cleaning agent.
Here are some best practices:
- Read the labels
- Create a lot of ventilation
- Contact local poison control if you have experienced exposure and serious symptoms.
Although it can be frightening to learn that you have created a toxic chemical reaction, there are a lot of products that you can mix – like vinegar and baking soda. If you are not sure of the chemicals that you can mix, it is better to stick to a cleaning product purchased in store (and not to mix it with nothing).
