Google using AI to decode the secret language of dolphins

Cracking the dolphin code.

Dolphins are one of the most intelligent animals on the earth and have been venerated for thousands of years for their intelligence, their emotions and their social interaction with humans.

Now Google uses artificial intelligence (AI) to try to understand how they communicate with each other – in the hope that one day humans could use technology to discuss with sympathetic fin mammals.

Google has teamed up with researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP), a non -profit organization based in Florida which has been studying and recorded dolphin sounds for 40 years, to build the new model of AI called Dolphingemma.

For decades, WDP correlated the types of sound with behavioral contexts. For example, signature whistles were used by mothers and calves to meet, while “squawks” of burst pulse are often observed during dolphin fighting, the researchers said, according to a Google blog on the project.

Click on “Buzzes” are often used during the nuptial parade or chasing the sharks.

From now on, using the vast data collected by WDP, Google has built Dolphingemma, based on the own light open model of Google, known as Gemma.

Dolphingemma has been trained to analyze the large record library to detect models, structures and even potential “meanings” behind the communications or vocalizations of the dolphin.

Over time, Dolphingemma will try to organize the sounds of dolphins in categories – almost like words, sentences or expressions in human language.

“By identifying recurring sound models, clusters and reliable sequences, the model can help researchers discover hidden structures and potential meanings within the natural communication of Dolphins – a task requiring an immense human effort”, a post on google On the project can be read.

“Finally, these models, augmented by synthetic sounds created by researchers to designate objects with which dolphins like to play, can establish a vocabulary shared with dolphins for interactive communication.”

Dolphingemma uses Google Pixel phone technology, in particular the audio recording technology used in Pixel devices, to make clean and high quality sound recordings of dolphin vocalizations.

Pixel phone technology can separate the clicks and whistles from the dolphins from background noise such as waves, boats or underwater static. This clean audio is essential for AI models like Dolphingemma, because the disorderly and noisy data would confuse AI, the researchers said.

Google says it plans to publish Dolphingemma as an open model this summer, allowing researchers around the world to use and adapt it.

Although it is formed on spotted dolphins from the Atlantic, the model could also help to study other species such as bottles or sponsor with a fine adjustment, researchers said.

“By providing tools like Dolphingemma, we hope to give researchers in the world the tools to extract their own acoustic data sets, accelerate the search for models and collectively deepen our understanding of these intelligent marine mammals,” said the blog post.
