Mexico City – The main human rights activist, Ruth López, was arrested in Salvador, after the prosecutor's office accused him of embezzlement of public funds. López directs the anti-corruption and justice program for the organization of human rights Pancake.

López was a frank critic of President Salvadoran Nayib Bukele. She and her organization have documented human rights violations in Salvador – including inhuman conditions in prisons and extended state of emergency, during which the government suspended many constitutional rights and imprisoned tens of thousands of alleged gang members without following a regular procedure.

Bukele and his government claim that repression has made the country much more safe, and although it has led to a spectacular reduction in crime, criticisms say that this has also led to the detention of more than 85,000 men, mainly men and spread human rights violations.

His arrest comes in the midst of an increasing repression of dissent in the country and at a time when the Trump administration cultivates increasingly close ties with the Bukele government, after agreeing to imprison the expenses expelled from the United States

In a statementCristals said Lopez was arrested at his home on Sunday evening by armed police. The organization of human rights says that she was unknown and denounced her arrest as a “short -term forced disappearance”.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday alongside the leaders of the Human Rights group and Lopez's partner, Louis Benavide, his mother, Eleonor Alfaro, said the treatment with the authority of his daughter had been “cruel” and had demanded his immediate release. Cristals and Lopez's family deny the accusations brought against it which, they believe, are with political motivation.

Lopez's arrest was confirmed by the prosecutor's office in a statement on social networks. They claim that Lopez was involved in the diversion of public funds while working alongside the former president of the magistrate of the supreme electoral court Eugenio Chicas, who was arrested in February for accusations of illicit enrichment – of the charges he denies.

In the past two weeks, the Salvadoral government has Deepens arrested. President Bukele has accused non -profit organizations to encourage demonstrations.

Bukele also announced that he would start to tax NGOs on the money they receive from abroad. This decision was largely considered an attack on its detractors.

In a joint declaration A number of international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have condemned Lopez's arrest and said they were “deeply concerned about the increasingly omnipresent fear environment that threatens freedoms in the country”.
