A 34 -year -old man was arrested Tuesday evening as part of the killings of four people found dead earlier during the day in a home in Bowdoin, Maine, the authorities said.
The killings seemed to be linked to a series of nearby shots which made three drivers injured – including one in a critical way – shortly after the discovery of the four bodies, the state police said.
The man arrested was identified by the police of the state of Maine as being Joseph Eaton.
Eaton was taken to two regional bridges prison and will make a first appearance in court later during the week, state police announced in a press release on Tuesday evening. State police did not say late Tuesday evening that he was detained as part of the highway shots.
CNN has not yet been able to identify a lawyer for Eaton.
“Investigators will work throughout the night to deal with several scenes and continue to interview the people involved in this incident,” said state police in the press release.
Police did not share details on a possible reason in the two incidents and did not share any details on the four people found dead at home.
In a declaration On Twitter, the Governor of Maine, Janet Mills, said: “Like the people of Maine, I am shocked and deeply saddened – acts of violence as we have experienced today and our state and our communities at the heart.”
Maine's state police responded to Bowdoin's home on Tuesday morning, where they found the four victims who died inside, Lieutenant Randall Keeten said on Tuesday at a press conference on Tuesday.
Shortly after, the authorities received information according to which several vehicles are affected by shots on the I-295 in the Yarmouth region, about 40 minutes from Bowdoin.
Three people were shot dead as they were driving and was taken to the hospital, state police said. At least one of these three was in critical condition on Tuesday, the authorities added.
“We have vehicles that have been struck by straight shots on which we get reports, so if someone has holes in their vehicles, please contact us so that we can follow this,” said Keateten.
The victims found in Bowdoin's house and the highway shooting are linked, said Keateten, adding that there is no threat to the public.
The four organizations were taken to the office of chief medical examiner in Augusta, where autopsies will determine the way and cause of the state of death.
The authorities asked anyone who had witnessed something or who has information on Tuesday morning incidents to contact.
“Many things happened this morning between these two scenes and it is the people we want to talk to, the people who were affected by this,” said Keeten, adding that the authorities continued to work on several affected scenes and collect more information.
